How to: Rust Removal Guide by Metal Type

1. Stainless Steel

Qualities

  • Highly resistant to rust due to chromium content
  • Forms a protective oxide layer
  • Still can develop surface rust or staining if neglected or exposed to salt/water

How to Clean Rust

Gentle method (recommended first):

  1. Mix baking soda with water into a paste
  2. Apply to rust spots
  3. Scrub lightly with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge
  4. Rinse and dry thoroughly

For tougher rust:

  • Use white vinegar:
    • Soak a cloth and lay it over the rust for 15–30 minutes
    • Wipe clean and rinse

Avoid:

  • Steel wool or harsh abrasives (can damage the protective layer)

2. Aluminium

Qualities

  • Lightweight and corrosion-resistant
  • Does not rust (no iron), but oxidizes into a dull grey/white layer
  • Soft and easily scratched

 How to Clean Oxidation

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water
  2. Apply with a cloth or sponge
  3. Gently rub the surface
  4. Rinse and dry

Alternative:

  • Lemon juice + salt for mild abrasion

Avoid:

  • Strong alkaline cleaners (like bleach)
  • Abrasive pads (they scratch easily)

3. Brass

Qualities

  • Alloy of copper and zinc
  • Develops tarnish (darkening), not rust
  • Can be polished to a bright gold-like finish

How to Clean Tarnish

Natural method:

  1. Mix lemon juice with baking soda into a paste
  2. Rub gently onto brass
  3. Let sit for a few minutes
  4. Rinse and buff dry

Alternative:

  • Vinegar + salt solution

Check first:

  • If it’s lacquered brass, cleaning may damage the coating—test a small area

4. Copper

Qualities

  • Excellent conductor of heat and electricity
  • Develops patina (green/blue layer) over time
  • Patina can be desirable or unwanted depending on use

How to Clean Tarnish/Patina

For bright finish:

  1. Sprinkle salt over the surface
  2. Rub with half a lemon
  3. Rinse and dry

For heavier buildup:

  • Use vinegar + salt solution
  • Let sit briefly, then rinse thoroughly

Important:

  • Always dry immediately to prevent new oxidation

General Tips (All Metals)

  • Dry thoroughly after cleaning → moisture causes corrosion
  • Test a small area first → especially for older or coated items
  • Use soft tools → microfiber cloths, non-abrasive sponges
  • Apply protective coatings (optional):
    • Light oil (for tools)
    • Wax or polish (for decorative items)
