What is a Carbon Metal Sheet?

Carbon steel is available in various types, and one of them is mild steel. It is better known as low carbon steel. Carbon steel gets this name because of the low carbon content in its sheets. However, not all mild steel sheets have the same amount of carbon. It depends primarily on the source of steel. But, approximately, the carbon content in MSl varies from 0.05% to 0.25%. Compared to higher carbon steels that usually have around 030% to 2% carbon, the milder variant often finds it in factories involved in making machines where weldable steel sheets are required.

How to Understand this type of steel

Many people believe that MS sheets are steel alloys, but they are not. Apart from iron, they don’t contain any other elements in large amounts. For example, MS sheets will not have molybdenum, chromium, or any other alloying elements. One advantage of mild steel is that the carbon and alloying element content is significantly low. This allows it to have some distinct properties that are different from any alloy steel and high carbon steel.

The low carbon content in type of metal makes it machinable and more ductile. This is one of the reasons why it is more weldable than other steels and even high carbon steel. However, when it comes to hardening or strengthening, this type of steel will fall short, and that’s again because of the carbon in it. Low carbon steel is almost impossible to harden even if you try quenching or heating. Since these sheets have very low carbon and alloying elements, it cannot block crystal structure dislocations. This results in lesser tensile strength compared to the higher carbon variant and the popular alloy steels.

How are sheets are made from this steel?

The manufacturing process of these steel sheets is similar to other carbon steels. First, the manufacturers will combine coal and iron ore. They will extract these elements and melt them in a blast furnace. It takes a lot of time for the mixture to melt down. As soon as it melts, the mixture is dropped in another blast furnace. This burns any kind of impurities that may exist in the coal and iron ore. It also helps the experts to make adjustments in the chemical composition.

Once the chemical composition is confirmed, the steel will cool down. It will soon solidify and form a rectangular shape. The manufacturer usually uses a cutting machine to cut out sheets from this structure depending on the thickness required. Sometimes cold drawing or hot rolling is done to give the right shape to the sheets. These sheets are often used in automobiles, fencing, nails, structural steels, decorations, signs, furniture, and a variety of other places.
